I use snow socks, and recommend them. They go on easy, and come off easy and you can take them off quickly when the road becomes clear, whereas with chains you are tempted to keep them on as they took an hour to put on, which then ruins your tyres.

The roads to Tignes are kept well clear of snow, as there are thousands of people who need to get to the resort each weekend.
However in bad weather it is mandatory to carry snow chains, and I would always recommend keeping a set in the car.
In my experience, snow chains are ghastly, you always need to put them on in freezing weather, and the back of the wheel is always filthy and wet..
